Most people call us looking for a "pressure washing" company. What they actually need, nine times out of ten, is the opposite. The black streaks running down a north-facing wall, the green film creeping across a roof, the slick coat on a shaded patio — none of that is dirt you blast off with brute force. It's living organic growth: algae, mildew, moss, and lichen feeding on the moisture that New England hands us in abundance. You don't kill a colony with a nozzle. You treat it. Soft Wash First, Surface-Matched PSI Always

Our default method is the soft wash — low pressure paired with biodegradable surfactants that break down organic growth at the root rather than scouring the surface it clings to. When we wash a house, the cleaning is done by chemistry; the water is just the rinse. That matters because vinyl siding, soffits, fascia, and old colonial clapboard were never built to take 3,000 PSI head-on. High pressure forces water behind seams, etches the surface, and strips oxidation unevenly, leaving streaks that look worse than what you started with.

A roof is the clearest example. Walk a Massachusetts neighborhood and you'll see asphalt shingles with dark stains — that's Gloeocapsa magma, a cyanobacteria that eats the limestone filler in the shingle. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA) is explicit that high-pressure washing voids most shingle warranties and shortens roof life. We follow those guidelines: roofs get a low-pressure soft wash, never a power wash. Period.

That said, pressure has its place. A concrete driveway, a stone walkway, or a commercial loading dock can take controlled high pressure because the substrate is hard and porous. The skill isn't owning a powerful machine — anyone can rent one. The skill is matching PSI, flow rate, nozzle, and chemistry to the specific surface in front of us. Soft wash on siding and roofs; calibrated pressure on hardscape; the right detergent dwell time on both.

Equipment and Solutions That Do No Harm

We run professional soft-wash systems with adjustable dilution, not a hardware-store wand. The detergents are biodegradable and break down after they do their job — no harsh runoff sitting in your soil. Before any house or roof wash, we pre-soak the surrounding landscaping with plain water, tarp or protect sensitive plantings, and keep beds saturated throughout so nothing concentrated reaches the roots. After we finish, we rinse everything down again.

For the many homes out here on private wells, this care isn't optional — it's the whole point. We manage runoff deliberately, control where rinse water goes, and never let it pool toward a wellhead or a vegetable garden. What we won't do is call ourselves "licensed," because in Massachusetts exterior cleaning isn't a licensed trade — there's no state license to hold for pressure washing or soft washing.
